Chapter 16

JAMISON SIGNED the note and silently carried it back into Lonnie’s bedroom to leave on the pillow next to him. He paused in the doorway and watched him sleep for several moments. It was difficult to abandon such a beautiful sight—Lonnie warm and bare in bed—but he turned and left the apartment as quietly as he could. He had things to do, to take care of. He climbed in his truck and aimed it at his mother’s house.

Rushing from the work site as he’d done, Jamison needed a shower, so earlier, when he and Lonnie arrived at the apartment, the two of them had shared a long, luxurious one, soaping, exploring, and enjoying each other. There wasn’t much room to maneuver, but they’d pressed close, working slowly, reverently. But then he had noticed Lonnie wouldn’t meet his eye.

“What is it, Lon?” He’d waited a moment. “I’m sorry about the confusion—”

“No, it’s not that. There’s something I need to tell you.”

“Okay.” But as Lonnie opened his mouth to speak, Jamison had crowded him suddenly, placing him beneath the spray and then laughed at his exasperated reaction.

“Hey!” Lonnie sputtered.

“Sorry, babe. Couldn’t resist.” They rinsed, stepped out together, and grabbed towels to dry off. “Okay, tell me.”

He’d dried himself quickly and tied a towel around his waist, but Lonnie had stood there dripping and lost in thought. Jamison had taken another towel and began drying him, and Lonnie allowed it as if he were an inept six-year-old after his nightly bath. Jamison loved it, drawing the thirsty cloth over Lonnie’s creamy, lean-muscled body. He’d grabbed a smaller towel and blotted his hair. Ah, that hair. He’d gotten hard again beneath his towel, but Lonnie hadn’t seemed to notice.

“I went to see Jerry the other day.”

Jamison had frowned. “Why?”

“I was….” Lonnie had shrugged. “I was angry, furious really, and wanted to tear into him.”

“Uh….”

“I didn’t want him talking to you, didn’t want him in our lives.” Lonnie turned and stomped into his bedroom, and Jamison chased after with the towel, eager to finish the job. “It feels wrong, the two of you even knowing each other.” When he caught up to him and tried to wrap his arms around him, Lonnie wiggled free, saying, “No, I don’t want to be cuddled right now.” After jerking the towel out of his hand, Lonnie turned his back to him. “I just want….”

“Tell me what you want.” Jamison had kept his distance, his hands held up in surrender. Lonnie’s shoulders slumped, and he didn’t seem to know where to look or how to settle himself. He finished drying himself as Jamison took a careful step closer. “You look like you want to punch something. I can understand feeling that way about the guy.”

“No… I mean yes, I do want to punch something, but this other part of me is trying to be rational.”

“Huh?”

Lonnie faced Jamison and glared. “Part of me doesn’t think the mistake in the article was a mistake, but that would mean JP knew we were a couple and was just trying to start shit.
